10 More Ways to Meet People and Get Involved at UC Davis

Last week we posted a blog entry entitled "11 Ways to Meet People and Get Involved at UC Davis". The problem is, we can’t stop thinking about it. There are so many ways new students can meet people, especially incoming freshmen. So we decided to go with it, and the result is ten more ways to meet people and get involved at UC Davis. Read these tips and then visit OneGate for UC Davis for more information about fun things to do on campus, places to eat around town (for when you get tired of DC food) and biking tips.

If you’re not a UC Davis student, many of these tips can be applied to other colleges; most universities have residence halls, orientations, Greek life and student clubs. Visit your school’s website for additional information on student life, and try searching Facebook for school groups and fan pages.

12. Take free classes at the ARC.

Avoid the freshman fifteen and meet some new people who will keep you committed to your personal fitness goals.

13. Join a club.

There are so many student clubs on campus. Love going to Tahoe? Join the Ski and Snowboard Club and enjoy the mountain air several times a quarter. Is fashion more your thing? Check out the Student Fashion Association. For tons of information on student clubs and organizations, visit the Student Programs and Activities Center website.

14. Volunteer.

Do good and meet other do-gooders. Check out Idealist.org for volunteer opportunities around the country, join a philanthropist fraternity, and check in with the City of Davis to get involved with the Davis community.

15. Go to your discussions.

TAs, especially for freshman and introductory classes, just love to put students into groups during discussion classes. It’s a great way to meet people plus find study partners.

16. Get a job on campus.

Even if you don’t need the money, working on campus is a fantastic way to meet people and make friends. You spend several hours a week with other students in close quarters and get some extra cash as well.

17. Make some beautiful noise.

If you’re musically inclined, join the Cal Aggie Marching Band-Uh. The Band-Uh is completely student-run and has an unbelievable amount of school spirit.

The last four suggestions on this list further explore one of the suggestions from the previous list: live in the dorms. Here are four specific ways to meet people in the dorms:

18. Introduce yourself when you move in.

Yes setting up your dorm room is exciting; it’s important to figure out the exact placements of your torn tickets from The Last Goodnight and Jason Mraz concerts on the wall next to your bed, but remember that you’re going to be living with these people for the next nine months. Walk around the hall and introduce yourself to your neighbors.

19. Keep your door open when it’s not a distraction.

Tons of people walking down the hallway will stick their head in to say hello and many a spontaneous conversation have resulted in long-term friendship.

20. Study in the public areas.

Most dorms have public rooms where students can hang out. If you don’t want to get distracted while reading, there are quiet rooms where noise is discouraged so you can get out of your room and still get something done.

21. Be social!

A couple times a quarter, RAs will organize social events for residents; get free ice cream or pizza or watch a movie while hanging out with your dorm-mates.

Remember, everyone else is in the same boat you are. Just be open and be yourself.
